Joanna Scheuring-Wielgus
Member of the European Parliament 2024-2029, Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D).
Previously, member of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland of the 8th, 9th and 10th term (until elected to the EP).
I was born in 1972 in Toruń and grew up in a housing estate made of large panels. Rubinkowo was then a huge construction site. I still remember playing on the sand heaps, the sound of concrete mixers at the crack of dawn, endless conversations at the carpet beater and the taste of “Murzynek” orangeade.
For many years I was professionally involved in marketing and public relations. I gained my skills in this field in an international food corporation. There I had the opportunity to test myself in large, demanding international projects and in teamwork. There I also met wonderful people, with my husband, Piotr, at the forefront.
Due to the fact that the need for continuous development is my life’s driving force, after a dozen or so years of full-time work, I dared to “go it alone” and opened a foundation in which I combined my two professional passions: the aforementioned marketing and culture. I called my foundation “Win-Win” after the English term for a situation in which everyone wins. I believe that it is possible to create such situations, also in politics, in which each side gains. I started working with artists and cultural institutions in Poland, Europe and Asia. Together with a group of amazing people, I managed to implement many valuable educational, social and cultural projects. I am especially proud of the Turquoise Holidays – unique summer camps for children run by artists, during which they learn art by experiencing it.
I have also been active in non-governmental organizations for many years. I co-founded the “Wyborcy” Association, which worked for the development of civil society, the electoral activation of residents of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship and civic education. I was also active in the “Rzeczpospolita Babska” Association, which undertook initiatives to activate and equalize women in broadly understood social life. The turning point in my life was the decision to enter active politics. After all, how long can you bang your head against the wall? Together with people with whom I had worked on various projects for many years, we decided to enter the political whirlwind. We understood that without real influence on the authorities, both local and national, we would not be able to implement all the ideas that guided us in our work in the non-governmental sector. We established the “Czas Mieszkańców” association, which is an alternative to the ossified system of local government authorities in Toruń. “Czas Mieszkańców” brings together people with different views and experiences, but what unites them is the idea of the subjectivity of residents in deciding about the fate of their city. It unites them simply by a common “city view”. On behalf of the Electoral Committee of Voters “Czas Mieszkańców” we won 4 mandates to the Toruń City Council. I became a councilor and chairwoman of the councilors’ club of our group. And in several other cities, urban movements, to which we also belong, also managed to get into local government. Finally, something started to change.
But life abhors a vacuum, and mine in particular. In the 2015 parliamentary elections, I was elected to the Sejm of the Republic of Poland of the 8th term from the Toruń-Włocławek district, and in the autumn of 2019, I was elected to the Sejm of the Republic of Poland of the 9th term.
As a tea lover, I had the opportunity to learn from the best about the secrets of this drink at Bramah Tea and Coffee Museum in London. I could talk about tea for hours… preferably over a cup of Darjeeling.
Everything I described above is important to me. But the most important thing is my family: my husband Piotr and three sons: Jan, Jakub and Olek.
They are the ones who give meaning to my life and the energy to act.
